Intro to Black and White Photography Darkroom Practices

 

Course Overview

Aimed at the analog photographer who is shooting black and white (B&W) film and wants to discover the magic of working in a darkroom, this course will demonstrate how to process a roll of film, produce a contact sheet, and print B&W photographs. Completion of this course counts as mandatory B&W darkroom induction for those with little or no darkroom experience who are planning to enroll in HACC’s B&W Photography Darkroom Open Lab course.


Learning Objectives:

 

• Understand how light and time work together to make a properly exposed print

• Become proficient with darkroom practices and equipment

• Process print-ready B&W negatives from previously shot film roll

• Produce one contact sheet

• Print 1-3 selected B&W photographs

• Demonstrate ability to work safely & independently in the darkroom lab

 

Course Topics:

 

• Introduction to darkroom practices & equipment

• Rewind and remove film from camera

• Load film and put into canisters in total darkness

• Process film using developing chemicals

• Dry film using drying cabinet

• Cut negatives appropriately to fit in negative sleeve

• Manipulate enlarger

• Make a contact sheet, test strip and finished print

• Use darkroom equipment and chemicals independently

Completion of this intro course is required in order to enroll in the Black and White Photography Darkroom Open Lab course with the exception of prior approval by the instructor.  

 

Refund Policy 

If HACC cancels a course, training, seminar, conference or trip/tour, all paid participants will receive a 100% refund of all tuition and fees. Any student who wishes to drop a course may do so by visiting or calling any of the campus Welcome Centers. These requests must be made no less than one (1) calendar day prior to the first class meeting date to be eligible for a full refund of tuition and fees, except for any tuition or fees noted as nonrefundable. Unless otherwise specifically stated or approved, no refund will be issued after a class start date. We do not issue partial refunds in the event a student starts a class late or does not complete the class. Students receiving Title IV Financial Aid will be subject to the federal regulations regarding withdrawal of classes. Financial Aid eligibility will be recalculated based on dates of participation in financial aid eligible programs.
