Course Overview
This open lab course provides individuals interested in the art of pottery to utilize HACC’s open studio to develop their craft. This open studio allows for those who are aspiring or accomplished in pottery art to utilize lab time for hand-building, sculpting, or wheel-throwing. Creative work is done independently through the non-instructional, supervised shared use of the ceramic’s studio. Participants will receive access to HACC equipment, kilns, and glazes. Clay (cone 10) and hand tools must be purchased separately. Faculty, staff, or lab monitors are available for orientation purposes only. Prerequisites: ART 151 or completion of a studio safety orientation conducted by Art Department Coordinator. Participation in demonstration sessions may be available.
Learning Objectives:
• Demonstrate responsible use of ceramics equipment, tools and materials in order to maintain a safe working environment
• Strengthen technical skills, design concepts and visual thinking that results in the creation of ceramics artwork
• Collaborate within a community of ceramics practitioners in the exchange of ideas to inspire and hone their craft
Course Topics:
• Workstation preparation, maintenance, and proper cleanup procedures
• Methods of clay preparation including but not limited to: use of extruders and hand tools, wheel throwing on a pottery wheel, and hand-building and sculpting techniques using slab rollers
• Bisque and glaze firing techniques
