Course Overview:
Provide a course of study to update Licensed Massage Therapists on current ethical issues in the massage therapy industry. Professional boundaries for practitioners, PA massage therapy license requirements, and massage therapy organizations professional codes of ethics will be discussed in detail. This class is eligible for 4 CEUs.
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
• Development of a professional attitude and commitment to ethical practices with clients and fellow practitioners.
• Development of good work habits and safe practices which promote the health and well being of the therapist and his/her clients.
• Increased awareness of areas of personal strengths and weaknesses specifically
Nancy M. Porambo is the owner/operator of The Therapy Option, Inc. in Jim Thorpe, PA. For the past 34 years, she has specialized in the relief of chronic pain utilizing neuromuscular therapy. For many years, Nancy was on staff with Paul St. John, pioneer of the St. John Method of Neuromuscular Therapy. She has a Masters degree in Clinical Health Psychology from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and taught psychology for Lehigh/Carbon Community College (LCCC) from which she was honored with the "Teacher of the Year" award. She also taught advanced psychology classes to honor students receiving college credits while attending high school.
Nancy authored the book "Professional Practice Concepts" which she incorporates into her board approved business/ethics class. Of the many classes she has formulated, she developed a class on "Fibromyalgia" that she teaches nationally. Nancy is an approved provider for the National Certification Board for Massage & Bodywork. In 2009, she was honored with the 1st license in Pennsylvania to practice massage therapy. Nancy recognized the importance of licensing to establish educational and ethical standards for massage therapists and spent 16 years pursuing licensing in the State of Pennsylvania.
She is a past-national President of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and currently serves as Advisor to the American Medical Association’s (AMA), Health Care Professional Advocacy Committee (HCPAC).
Nancy also spends time working as an expert witness in legal cases involving massage therapists. She has published numerous articles on how to develop an ethical massage practice and most recently, published an article on risk management and massage therapy.
